Banten Growth and Population

Population in an area is actually a great development asset and potential if the population is qualified. In contrast, a great deal number of population and its growth with minor quality will be a big burden for the development process itself.

Banten population based on the result of Population Census shows that the number of population is increasing. In 1961 population number is 2.438.574 while in 1971 is 3.045.154 and increasing toward 4.015.837 in 1980 and 5.967.907 in 1990. In year 2000 population number based on 2000 Population Census has become 8.096.809 and in 2005 is increasing to be 9.308.944 inhabitants.

Increasing trend in
population growth from one census to the next census or from one survey to the next survey is not only caused by natural population growth, but also caused by migration. Migrants come to Banten because of many reason and job opportunities in many sectors, among others, industrial companies situated Cilegon, Tangerang and Serang, tourism companies in Pandeglang, Cilegon and Serang and any other job opportunities and also the more conducive atmosphere for people to enhance any economic activities.

Population growth rate in
Banten for periods of 2000-2005 grows in average of 2,83 percent. This rate shows a decrease compared with population growth rate in periods of 1990-2000 showing 3,21 percent. If viewed from the regency and municipals side, for periods of 2000- 2005 growth in average shows a decrease, but this isn’t happened in Kabupaten Pandeglang and Lebak that shows an increase growth. High population growth is still incurred in Kabupaten Tangerang and Kota Tangerang with the average of population growth is 3,63 percent and 3,0 percent respectively.

The highness of population
growth in those 2 regencies is closely related with their economic potential that has grown to be the centre of economic area and has become destination for migrants. It is also caused by their sites that are straight-bordered with Indonesian Capitol (Jakarta) –Jabotabek area. A great number of inhabitants whose daily economic activities in Jakarta stay in that two area. Compared with population growth rate in the previous period (1980-1990), all regencies and municipals, except Serang, shows a decreasing growth rate.

Extreme decreasing growth rate incurred in Kota Tangerang from 8,77 percent in 1980-1990 to 3,83 percent in 1990-2000. This happened because in the periods of 1980-1990 in Kota Tangerang there is an addition in the number of district from 3 districts become 5 districts. The 2 districts are previously of Kabupaten Tangerang As explained above, population number always increases from year to year. Population number in Banten in 2005 based on the result of National Social Economic Survey (Susenas) in February, increase to be 9.308.944 inhabitants, 4.701.284 of them are men and greater than the woman that only amounting 4.607.660 inhabitants. Meanwhile, the number of household in Banten in 2004 is 2.504.330.

As a region that is open
for everyone, based on the result of Population Sencus 2000 in Banten there are 16,871 expatriates as noted in table 3.14. Of all expatriates, most of them come from The Mainland China and Taiwan amounted 12,141 expatriates (71.96 percent), while the rest amounting 4,730 expatriates (28.04 percent) are from Arab, Pakistan, British and many others. The other data about population that is necessary to know is the number of population based on projection.

Projected population
data is needed to, among others, quantify development targets in the future. The projection of population (demography) is basically needed by the three important users, those are planner, decision maker and analyst. Banten population data as the result of projection based on age group and sex and the number of population based on regency. It is estimated that the number of population in Banten in 2005 is around 9.570,4 thousand inhabitants.

Distribution and Population Density

Spread or distribution of
population is basically a population composition based on geographical area. From the population spread data it can be seen whether the population composition in a region is flat or not. Trough population spread, it also can be seen which region with dense population. Population spread indicator is noted in percentage. By that way its pattern can be inferred.

In the time range between 2000 and 2005, population spread in Pandeglang, Lebak and Serang municipal tends to decline while in Tangerang municipa and Tangerang city, population spread relatively inclines. The inclination in those 2 municipals is quite fair remembering that the regions is developing, especially from industrial sector accompanied by trade and service sector, making many manpower come from outside area including those who open a new venture whether in small, middle of big scale like Jakarta. The spread of population will have more meaning when it is related with the density of population in an area. This is important because a region with a huge population will not be considered as dense if it is wide.

The number of population density that is increases from year to year. This is shown by the data from the last two censuses. In 1990 there are 678 inhabitants per km square while in 2000 there are 920 inhabitants per km square and increases to be 1.058 inhabitants per km square in 2005. Just like in any other regency, there is not a decline in population density. If the population density in every municipal is compared, until 2005 there are three municipals with high population density, those are Tangerang city with 8.355 inhabitants per km square, Tangerang municipal with 2.994 inhabitants per km square and Cilegon city with 1.905 inhabitants per km square. The lowest population density occurs in Lebak with 398 and Pandeglang with 403 inhabitants per km square.
